COLOMBO

Heart of Sri Lanka

Colombo serves as the executive and judicial capital of Sri Lanka, with Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, a suburb of Colombo, acting as the legislative capital. Located on the west coast of the island, just south of the Kelani River, Colombo stands as a significant port on the Indian Ocean, boasting one of the world’s largest artificial harbours and managing the majority of Sri Lanka’s foreign trade. The city has seen a reduction in Western influence since Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. Colombo features numerous parks and playing fields, including the Galle Face Green along the sea, the Vihara Maha Devi Park, and the Ridgeway Golf Links. Cricket and football grounds are dispersed throughout the city, and tennis and track events enjoy popularity. Mount Lavinia Beach provides opportunities for sea bathing and surfing. The international airport is situated in Katunayake, while Ratmalana airport handles domestic flights.
